The Rt.Rev. Edward Alfred Livingstone Moore M.A [Oxford] was the fourth Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Travancore-Cochin from 1925 to 1937. In 1902 this English missionary left behind his high academic pursuit and decided to come to India as a missionary. He took charge of the C.M.S. College, Kottayam as its acting Principal at age of 32.
This slender, good looking and energetic Anglican clergyman, with his deep sincerity and refined manners, in no time won the affection and regard of all who came into contact with him. His ability as a Lecturer in English, his co-operation with his colleagues, his simple but practical sermons in the College Chapel, the discipline he exercised tempered with mercy, were all admired by the student population. He studied the South Indian languages to effectively carry out personal interaction with the ordinary people of the land. He never carried money or accepted salary when he was here. His simplicity and complete detachment from the worldly glory marked him out as an exceptional man of God.
The firm stand he took against mass conversion and the fact that he accepted only genuine seekers after the truth during the Ezhava movement were appreciated by Mahatma Gandhi who visited the Bishop at his residence when he came to Travancore at the time of the famous Temple-entry proclamation.
He was shy but firm, detached, but attached to the values of life. He remained a celibate, for he was wedded to the Truth. He stood for certain values of life. His simplicity, purity, high minded academic pursuits and selflessness to the extreme inspires us.
